Farzan Residence Great Falls, Virginia

“Tell me everything you know about Poseidon’s Trident.”

Farzan’s eyebrows shot up and his pulse pounded in his ears. Operation Poseidon’s Trident was top secret, beyond top secret. Extremely compartmentalized. And the shock at hearing those words spoken by an Iranian agent caused him to slip up. “How the hell do you know about that?” He could almost hear the smile on the other end of the line.

“Thank you for confirming its existence.”

Farzan muttered a curse. Perhaps Morrison was right. He was too emotionally distracted by what was going on. He had just committed a gaffe that even a raw recruit wouldn’t. “Well, if you know about it, you also know it would have little to do with me. All I know is that it exists and that even I’m not supposed to know about it.”

“You just lied to me, which means I’m going to order your wife beaten close-fisted for five minutes.”

“No, wait!” He squeezed his eyes shut. “What do you want to know?”

“Everything you know.”

“I wasn’t lying when I said it has little to do with me.”

“Little isn’t nothing.”

His eyes burned. If he told this man anything, he was committing treason. He could go to prison for the rest of his life. But they had his family. What could he possibly do? If he didn’t tell them what they wanted, they would beat his wife mercilessly, perhaps even his children.

If he could only delay them. His last briefing had Dylan Kane in Tehran, his first recon mission of where his children were held already completed. The Swiss had made contact with the Iranians about his wife, but they were denying any knowledge of her being in their system. It was a standard tactic. They could believably be still processing the paperwork. Once the Iranians officially knew the American government was aware of what was going on, they might ease up on his wife and perhaps even let his children go.

But that would take time. Time he didn’t have. Though perhaps he could buy a little to give him a chance to think. He had been prepared for all manner of questions concerning the ops under his command. It had never occurred to him they might ask about Trident, because it didn’t involve Iran directly.

It involved Russia.

None of this made sense. Why would the Iranians be concerned with a Russian-focused op? They were obviously asking on the Russian’s behalf. But why would that be their first question? And it forced him to wonder, was this just coincidence, or had his family been targeted and lured to Tehran in order to ask him specifically about this operation?

He needed time to think. He flipped over to the browser on his laptop, sitting in front of him, and one-finger-typed what just might buy him at least a few minutes, then tapped on the result, hoping it actually matched what he had searched.

A doorbell sound emitted from his speakers. “Somebody is at the door.”

“What?”

“Somebody is at the door. I have to let you go.
